CSA Program
The Urban Farmer is currently running a 2010-2011 CSA Program. Please Contact us if you have any questions or if are interested in becoming a member of our Regional Farm based CSA program Click Here. Limited membership available.
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. In basic principle, it means the community supports the farmer. For direct access to the farmer and direct access to fresh local food, the community can sign up as members. Members can buy a share of the farm and receive a share of the harvest each week. Much like buying a share of stock, the community shares the risks with the farmer, in addition to sharing the benefits of bountiful harvests. Each week members receive what is available to harvest based on their share size. For more information about subscribing as a member or share information please click here.
The purpose of our CSA subscription program is to provide access to fresh farm food directly from the farmer to the consumer. By knowing the farmer who grew your food as well as knowing where and how it was grown is central to our approach. The Urban Farmer CSA program is designed to be as far away from a produce delivery service as possible. This simply means that if it is not grown locally it will not be available to subscribers. There will also be a focus of seasonality. Today we take the availability of produce for granted. Currently you may be able to find what you're looking for at the corner super market even if not in season, but it was more than likely grown in a foreign country.
Know Your Farmer
The Urban Farmer has a a vertical hydroponic farm in Pompano Beach where we are growing a variety of items that will go into our weekly CSA baskets. In addition, there may be items that are grown by other farmers we know personally. When CSA members receive their weekly basket, they will receive a farm list. This list identifies what items are in the box and the names the farms that each of the items came from. You will have direct knowledge of which farms your produce came from.
What's Available from Florida?
Well, lots of wonderful food is grown and raised in Florida! Most crops can be grown in Florida but on a seasonal basis. This means a large variety of fruits and vegetables are available most of the year. Aside from fruits and vegetables, Florida also has available very unique items like grass fed beef, grass fed lamb, grass fed pork, free range turkey, free range poultry, free range farm eggs and so much more. Florida even has a rice farm! There is no reason why in Florida we should not know where our food comes from, and no reason for stores to carry mostly imported foods!
What is a CSA?
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. The concept is that the community supports the local farmer, and in return the subscriber receives a share of a seasonal crop.
